Farley is an artist who lives, works and follows her art on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
My artistic journey started over 30 years ago when I headed off to the big smoke of Melbourne to study textile design as a young and very naïve girl from the Sunshine Coast. That experience set me on a creative path that I am forever grateful for. I may have occasionally strayed from the track but I've found that life choices have always led me back.
My first foray into the creative world professionally was in textiles with a label that I started in partnership with another creative soul, my mum. We started the label Farley Design by printing t-shirts on her verandah. That lead us to selling our designs at the then (1980s) well regarded Riverside markets in Brisbane. We learnt a lot. It wasn't long and we were printing silks, linen and cottons for fashion designers as well as ourselves and our label grew along with our experience. Looking back it was a wonderfully exciting time that lasted over 10 years. But then came the time for the next phase of my life, motherhood - an experience that I think requires a huge amount of creativity, just expressed differently.
Fortunate enough to be able to work part time (a husband can come in handy occasionally!), I taught textiles at TAFE and worked in fashion boutiques giving me time to spend with our daughter. But daughters grow up , and I had a yearning to get back to I to living creatively. I decided to up skill and headed back to
Uni. That was a huge learning curve. After completing a graphic design degree I then worked in that field for some years both freelancing and at a local newspaper. This experience was invaluable for me as a creative person. I met and worked with some fabulous people who taught me a lot, however I eventually came to realise that the freedom of painting was calling.
Follow your art is our family’s motto, whatever that art may be and so that is what I’ve decided to do. Enough talking about it, time to get on with it.
I hope you find something you like in my work and that maybe you too can find inspiration to follow your art.
