Does it take you closer to the mountain?

First blog post…daunting. Far more daunting than the blank canvas but here we go.

I’ve decided to ‘follow my art’ and see where it takes me (toward the mountain is the plan – see below).

In Neil Gaiman's Key Note Address to the University of the Arts Class 2012 (so inspirational for anyone let alone University graduates) he explains that he visualises a mountain to be his creative goal and if the decisions in his life take him in the opposite direction to the mountain then they’re the wrong decisions. Therefore the choices that take him closer to the mountain are the ones to say yes to.

Last year I read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic and I can say it really did have a significant effect on me and how I view myself and my art. Worth a read if you’re feeling creatively stagnant. I was not going anywhere with my art. I would just say ‘yeah I’m going to do this or I should do that’ but never actually took any steps or made any decisions that would get me anywhere. In a way there was safety in that, I could hide there in my comfortable inertia, never put myself out there, but ultimately I knew that it was making me sad and cranky. Reading Big Magic just lifted a cloud and said to me give it a go, what have you got to lose?  
 
My goal is to live a creative life. the decisions I’m making have to lead me to my mountain. This website is a step toward the base camp.
